Janamsthan Sri Nankana Sahib

Nankana Sahib is a place of distinction in District Sheikhupura of Punjab (Pakistan). Named after an old local Mulim ruler Rail Bhoy, its old name was Talwandi Tai Bhoy. Sat Gur Nanak Dev Ji was born in this historical town on 15th April 1469 A.D. and enjoyed his childhood here. Associated with the acts and activities of his life, six beautiful historic gurdwaras are clustered beneath Janamasthan, including the Pakashsthan itself. Two Gurdwaras associated with 5th and 6th Patshahs are also there in the near vicinity.

Sheikhupura is at two hours drive via Motorway, from Lahore. All modes of transport including rail, buses, are conditioned coaches, private taxies etc. are abailable from Lahore to Sheikhupura except air services. Accommodation for Yatrees is available in Janamasthan. There are several small hotels in the town where one can stay. Langar is located inside the Gurdwara Janamasthan. There are all types of cheap hotels in the city where food of all kinds is available.

The largest and the ever first Gurdwara Janamasthan is in this city, where Sat Gur Nanak Dev Ji was born. The building with a dome was constructed during 1819-20 with the approval of Maharaja Ranjit Sing. It was erected exactly at the place of Sat Gur Nank Dev Ji’s house.

The open veranda in front of Chaukhandi was built by Mahant Sadhuram and it has been given the name of Baradari. The portion above the foyer, the tower and the boundary wall around the Gurwara was built the Gurwara Coommittee. The ‘Sarover’ was repaired during the reign of Ranjit Sing. Its steps were reconstructed by Baba Gurmukh Sing Ji in 1944 A.D.

Initially the control of the Gurdwara was with the Udasis. Later on it shifted to Mahants. When Sikhs demanded its control, the Mahants resisted violently and aggressively. On 20th February 1921 A.D. The Mahants opened fired and many un-armed Sikhs were martyred ruthlessly.

Jhand Sabib

They were cremated on the same day near Jand Sahib where now stands a big sortico (New Bara Dari). Some bullets even hit the Guru Granth Sahib. The signs of bullets are still there in the walls of Parkashasthan. The Government of Punjab (Pakistan) has formulated a plan to uplift Nankana Sahib to extend maximum facilities to the Yatrees.
