Rawalpindi - Taxila......... Ghandara History

This is a one day trip starting from Rawalpindi Railway station After an hour stay at Golra Sharif the tourists entrain the safari and steam off to Taxila. Gandhara evokes a history of 5000 years. The area encompassing the valley of Peshawar, the down stretches of Hazara and the width and breadth of Rawalpindi Division witnessed the rise and fall of Buddhist civilization interspersed with the depredation of Huns and the onslaught of the Greeks led by the legendary Alexander the Great. The central point of civilization was the university established at Taxila: a long time capital of Budhist monarchs. It is to our advantage that we are having to this day the relics of this great culture in the shape of Taxila Museum and the archeological sights spread around. These sights are the remnants of the university and the ancient cities like Sirkup & Julian

The passage to Taxila winds through the lush green picturesque Margalla hills. At Taxila, tourists are led to the Taxila museum. There after people go to the archeological remains of the ancient Buddhist city of Sirkup and university at Julian. Both these sites are situated at the foot hills surroudeed by numerous citrus orchards and Khanpur lake. The lake stands at the journey’s end, where tourists savour fast food in the back drop of a seascape. The passenger besides complementary snakes, do have the choice to enjoy themselves with tea, soft drinks, sweet meat and other tit bits made available in the train.
